Mayor John McGowan announced at Monday’s city council meeting that the city has received a grant of $100,000 for recreation. He praised City Clerk Cathy Dickerson for her work in obtaining these funds before the deadline. The federal funds are from the Justice Department.

Eddrick Deandre Davis, the son of Annie and Eddie Davis, is this year’s South Highlands Middle School Valedictorian.
Miss Bullock County High School and a class of 2010 graduate Charity Glaze received a $1,000 scholarship on behalf of Best Buy.

The Bullock Chapel Committee has received a Baldwin Electric Organ for the Bullock County Correctional Facility Chapel from the Trinity Presbyterian Church, Birmingham, Al. The session and membership of Trinity Presbyterian saw the chapel’s erection as a worthy project in which they would be pleased to have a part.
Pamela Merriott-Shirah of Union Springs contributed a short article to Reader’s Digest and it was published in the June 1995 issue under the heading Poise R Us.
Herbert Ray McGowan, born in Union Springs, Alabama, recently received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. He is the son of Oree and the late Herbert McGowan. He is the brother of Sharon Denise McGowan and the nephew of Doc, Cody, Walter, Clifford, Alfonza, and Johnny Gray McGowan.

The Hoffmann triplets, Susannah Parish, Norma Davison, and Marth Salter, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Hoffmann of Fitzpatrick, Alabama on Saturday, May 23 in St. Margaret’s Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama. They also were welcomed home by their brother, John, age 10 and sister, Paige, age 6.
Jennifer Gaston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jackie Gaston, celebrated her fourth birthday with a lawn party.
Mr. and Mrs. James Thomas Spurlin, Sr. of Fitzpatrick, Alabama announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Helen Louise, to James Alfred Stewart, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Franklin Stewart of Union Springs.

Marine and Mrs. Fred Cappell announce the birth of a daughter, Saturday, June 2, whom they have named Rebecca Chappell.
Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Beverly and son, Charlie, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Hodge and son, James Beverly of Union Springs, were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Beverly.
Miss Ada Kate Posey (Dickie) will leave June 10 for Tuscaloosa to take several courses at the University, leading to a Master’s Degree in Sociology. She expects to be away for three months.

A large fishing party left early Tuesday morning for a trip to Dead Lakes, Florida. It was composed of Messrs. B. P. Powell, T. F. Pitts, Whit Pitts, C. M. Franklin, W. L. Anderson, H. L. Lee, S.C. Cowan, N. Tucker, and D. Tucker.
Mr. R. E. Thornton, of Three Notch, spent Saturday in our city.
Messrs. T. F. Davis, J. S. Finlayson, and E. P Hasslam, of Perote, were in Union Springs Monday.
