Juanita Smith, a member of the wonderful ensemble cast of The Passing of Pearl by Vain Colby, was selected to represent the play in the All-Star Cast made up of actors from eight competing theaters at the Alabama Conference of Theater’s annual ACTFest ‘13 held in Wetumpka this past weekend.

25 Years Ago- 1997

The Model Garden Club opened the 1997-98 year with a meeting at the lovely country home of Mrs. Sam Forrer of Fitzpatrick with Mrs. J. F. Moorer as co-hostess.

The Barbour-Bullock County District Attorney’s Office sponsored a continuing education seminar for law enforcement personnel at Lakepoint Lodge on October 22, 1997. The seminar was attended by fifty-nine law enforcement officers from Barbour, Bullock, Russell, Henry, and Houston Counties.

The Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade will be held Friday, December 5, at 3:30 p.m. You are urged to start making plans to participate with a float, car, marching unit, or another creative idea. A $200 cash prize will be awarded for the best float.

Burt Smithart has announced his candidacy for Circuit Judge of Barbour and Bullock Counties. Smithart is a partner with the law firm of Jinks, Smithart, Jackson & Daniel, LLC, with offices in Union Springs and Clayton, Alabama.

50 Years Ago- 1972

Louis Plant joined the Union Springs Telephone Co., Inc. as Cost Accounting Supervisor. He has a varied background in telephony with the Alabama Telephone Company in Tallassee. Mr. Plant is living in Union Springs.

The Red Cross Bloodmobile will be in Union Springs Tuesday, November 21, with a goal of 100 donors giving blood to help meet the needs of our ill and injured friends and neighbors.

A gasoline truck rammed the rear of a state truck last Thursday morning, injuring all three men in the vehicles. The accident occurred on Highway 26 near the Bullock-Russell County line. Trooper Billy Henderson, who investigated the wreck, said it happened about 10:30 a.m.

The Rev. Alton Green, pastor of the Hopewell Church, and Rev. Gene Edwins, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Union Springs, will exchange pulpits for the Morning Services of Worship this Sunday, November 26th. The Rev. Alton Green is Vice Chairman of the Parish Staff and has served as Pastor of the Hopewell Church for three years. The public is cordially invited.

75 Years Ago- 1947

Miss Betty Coston, a first-grade daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rayford Coston, was crowned Queen of the Inverness Harvest Festival as a climax to the Halloween Carnival Friday evening.

At a recent meeting of the Union Springs City Council, Mr. Henry C. Chappell was elected to membership in the Union Springs Board of Education.

At the regular meeting of the local Post of the American Legion Monday night, the Post presented to Mr. Exton Tucker a check for $50.00 which will be used for the local Boy Scouts. Mr. Tucker is to be congratulated on having accomplished so much with this group of boys.

100 Years Ago- 1922

The Business Men’s Evangelistic League of Montgomery sent a delegation to Union Springs on Sunday in response to an invitation from the Men’s Federated Bible Classes here. This League holds itself in readiness at any time to go anywhere they are asked and assist in any sort of moral or religious movement.

Remember the Ladies of the Presbyterian Bazaar will fill your orders for Thanksgiving dinner. Send them in now to Mrs. Frank Haynes, Mrs. J. B. Reid, Mrs. T. H. Burgess, or Miss Carrie Anderson.

Beginning in 1923 the unit of agricultural work will be the community instead of the county as heretofore. It is believed that through work in communities that better farm cooperation of all kinds will be secured. The idea is to develop community life so as to make farmers more prosperous, better neighbors and happier citizens.
