Midway Fire Department Volunteer Firefighters will observe its National Fire Prevention Week, October 7-13, 2012. This year's theme is "have two ways out."

Saint T. Thomas, Jr. defeated John McGowan by a vote of 590 to 527 in the Tuesday run–off election for Union Springs Mayor.

Charles Davenport Hudson has passed the 2012 Alabama Bar Exam and become an associate with the law firm of Penn & Seaborn, LLC.

25 Years Ago- 1997

Calvin Lewis Stowes has been named manager of the local office of Alabama Power Company.

Firemen have been plagued with fires at vacant homes in the city. A house located at 404 Johnson St. was discovered with leaping flames from the home at about 12:00 midnight Saturday night. It took firemen over two hours to extinguish the blaze.

A Goodwill donation drive will be at Gibson's Home Center parking lot on October 10, 1997 from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

Plans have been completed for the upcoming wedding day of Miss Jenny Hatfield and Mr. Ken Renfroe. Rev. John Emfinger will perform the ceremony at the Eastside Baptist Church Saturday, October 18 at 2:00 in the afternoon. All friends and family are invited to attend.

50 Years Ago- 1972

An action-filled day is planned by the Active Christian Teens of the Faith Independent Methodist Church for Saturday, October 7, when they will be hosts for a big youth rally.

The second annual Bullock Memorial Homecoming will take place on Friday, October 6, 1972. Beginning the festivities at 1:30 will be a Pep Rally. Alumni, parents, and friends are urged to attend.

Mr. and Mrs. Cephus H. Hendley, Jr. announced the engagement of their daughter, Patricia Ann, to James Thomas Spurlin, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. James Thomas Spurlin, of Fitzpatrick, Alabama.

75 Years Ago- 1947

"For outstanding contributions to the quality of life in our community," Mrs. J. A. Crook was named Union Springs' first Woman of the Year at a banquet Thursday night at the Carnegie Library.

An old landmark was sold this week when Messrs. Carey and Clyde Bryan purchased the Foster home and some adjoining acreage. This beautiful place, with its spacious grounds, was built by Dr. S. J. Foster about 1856 and is known to be one of the oldest homes in the city.

The operation of the Light and Water Plant has been taken over by the city authorities at the expiration of the lease of Anderson & Hodgson, said lease having ended on October 1.

According to the Advertiser, Tuskegee reports an epidemic of dengue fever. But a single case has been known in Union Springs this year and that imported from Florida.

Mrs. W. R. Felton has been appointed by Governor Hardwick of Georgia to fill the unexpired term of the late Senator Watson. As Congress is not now in session, Senator Felton will have no opportunity to see active service before her successor is appointed. She is said to be a woman of brilliant attainments.
