Union Springs Mayor John McGowan read Dr. Seuss books to children at Merrit, Union Springs Elementary, and Conecuh Springs Christian School on Wednesday.

The Red Door Theatre’s performances of Judy Simpson Cook’s, Country Songs, was a sell-out. The cast and crew included Alicia Atkins, Robert Moorer, Dustin Anderson, Anna Perry, Charity Smith, Johanna Hubbard, Joseph Crawford, Beau Shirley, Travin Wilkerson, Yolanda Ousley, and Stanley Davis.

Herman R. Rotten of Union Springs, Ala. has been recognized by the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association for 34 years of safe, accident-free driving of a commercial tractor-trailer.

25 Years Ago - 1996

Smokin’ Joe’s Sundust, setter male, owned and handled by Joe Bruner of Destin, Florida, was named the winner of the National Amateur Free-For-All Championship last Tuesday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. John Brooks of Union Springs and Mr. and Mrs. Butch Graham of Midway, announce the engagement of their daughter, April Rose, to Mr. Brian Sanderson. A May 18, 1996, wedding is planned at Hillcrest Garden Center in Montgomery.

Ray Pritchett of Union Springs made the honor roll for the first semester at the Alabama School for the Deaf Jr. High School Department.

Bobby and Kizzy May are now settled into their home on Powell Street. Their furniture arrived the past weekend from Douglasville, GA, and with the help of family and friends, things are getting in place.

50 Years Ago - 1971

An 8:00 p.m. ceremony on March 5 united in marriage Miss Shirley Dianne Capps and Joe McGowan Varner, Jr., when Rev. David Crocker officiated.

Dr. Sidney Cohn will return today from New Orleans, La. where he attended the New Orleans Graduate Medical Assembly.

Mrs. Beulah Sims accompanied her grandchildren, Viva, Betsy, and Pam to the movie, Walt Disney Presents, last Wednesday night.

75 Years Ago - 1946

Mrs. Comer F. Green is reported to be improving satisfactorily following an operation at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Montgomery, last Friday.

The Chunnenuggee Public Garden Club will meet next Wednesday afternoon, March 13, at 3:00 p.m., with Mrs. J. Frank Stroud, hostess.

Wisteria blossoms, hanging in their graceful festoons, are now beautifying many places in Union Springs. Spring is in evidence.

Mr. M. W. Hall, Jr. of James, called in and made us a pleasant call Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Paulk and Master James Paulk spent the week-end at Troy, Ala., the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Auxford Sartain.
