John and Lillie Williams were inducted into the State of Alabama 2021 Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame on August 29, 2021.
The annual Hall of Fame ceremony was scheduled to be held at the RSA Activity Center in Montgomery.
They were recognized with this honor for being married 65 years or longer. They were married on September 3, 1954, making them married 67 years.
Due to the pandemic, the ceremony was canceled, and the certificate, letter, and lapel pins were mailed to them.
The letter from the State of Alabama Department of Senior Services is dated September 1, 2021, and reads as follows: "It is our privilege on behalf of the Alabama Department of Senior Services and the Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame to honor you for being married 65 years or longer.
We are very sorry that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are unable to hold an induction and awards ceremony this year.
We offer this certificate and lapel pins as a small token of celebration in recognition of your impressive milestone.
We send our warmest congratulations and wishes for a happy and healthy year."
The letter was signed by Jean W. Brown, Commissioner, and Jerry Fielding, Hall of Fame Chairman.
The certificate mailed to them reads as follows: "State of Alabama 2021 Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame, 65th Wedding Anniversary Award presented to Mr. & Mrs. John and Lillie Williams.
"This award is presented as recognition for being married 65 years or more."
The certificate was signed by Gov. Kay Ivey, Commissioner Jean Brown, Secretary of State Merrill, and Hall of Fame Chairman Jerry Fielding.
The Hall of Fame involves several other categories, such as Lifetime Achievement, Religion, etc.
There were 13 couples throughout Alabama honored in the Married 65 Years and longer category.
