A man dreamed about Heaven and Hell. In his dream he asked St. Peter to allow him to visit both Heaven and Hell so he could see what they were like. St. Peter took him first to Hell. In Hell there was a huge banquet hall and all the people were seated at the banquet table.

On the table there was every variety of wonderful things to eat and drink. Yet the people were emaciated and starving. They were in misery. The man did not understand. And then he saw their arms. From their elbows to their hands their arms were five feet long. Although they continuously tried, they could not feed themselves. Thus, they were cursed to endure an eternity of hunger and thirst.

Horrified, the man asked St. Peter to take him to Heaven. In an instant, the man was transported into the gates of Heaven. In Heaven, just like in Hell, there was a huge banquet hall and all the people were seated at the banquet table. On the table there was every variety of wonderful things to eat and drink. And just like in Hell, all the peoples’ arms were five feet long from their elbows to their hands. It was impossible for them to feed themselves. Yet, in Heaven, all the people were well fed and happy. They were laughing, talking and living abundantly. The man did not understand. He said to St. Peter, Heaven looks just like Hell. A banquet table filled with wonderful things to eat and drink and every person’s arms so long that they cannot feed themselves. But in Hell everyone is suffering while in Heaven people are well fed and happy. What is the difference. St. Peter replied, in Heaven, people feed each other.

This is not just an abstract concept about what our afterlife will be like. It is about here and now. You choose how you want to live.
