The search for a Superintendent of Bullock County Board of Education has been narrowed to five candidates; Dr. Matthew Alexander, Jr. from Decatur, GA; Mr. Jimmy C. Fryer from Louisville, AL; Dr. Elliott Harris from Leeds, AL; Dr. Irma W. Townsend from Enterprise, AL and Dr. Avis Williams from Kannapolis, North Carolina.

Bullock County Board of Education will interview the top five candidates on May 18, 19 and 20. On May 18 and 19 one candidate will be interviewed from 5:00 p.m. until 6:45 p.m. and a second candidate from 7:00 p.m. until 8:45 p.m. On May 20 the final candidate will be interviewed from 5:00 p.m. until 6:45 p.m.

The public will be allowed to attend the interviews which will be held at the David Lowe Gymnasium at Bullock County High School. Thirty-eight candidates applied for the position from eight states.

The Alabama Association of School Boards assisted in the search. Dr. James V. Wright with the association attended a work session with Bullock County Board of Education on May 5, 2015 and presented the top five candidates.

Hawthorne Reed asked the board if the next superintendent would be required or given a subsidy to live in Bullock County. Board member Lowe answered, “We have not discussed that.” Dr. Wright said many school districts do not require the superintendent to live in the county because it will limit what can be attracted to the system.

Dr. Wright recommend the candidates be taken on a tour of the school system and taken to meet elected officials.
