Coach Prime is leaving Jackson State University (JSU) better than he found it. The University of Colorado made Deion Sanders, also known as Coach Prime, their 28th head football coach during the first week of December. This news has sports fans, HBCU fans, and others scratching their heads and using social media to voice their opinions, thoughts, and concerns.

Although Hugh Freeze, Matt Rhule, Kenny Dillingham, Brent Key, Alex Golesh, Tom Herman, Biff Poggi, F.J. Kinne, and Luke Fickell were all hired in the past two weeks, Coach Prime’s hire seems to have generated the most buzz and garnered the most attention. This breaking news certainly has my attention.

Like many, I am a fan of Coach Prime. In high school, I wore his jersey and shoes. I have talked to many people about this unexpected hire, and there are different opinions. I believe he took the position because Athletic Director Rick George wanted him. I know Prime, but I don’t know him. It is hard to explain, so I won’t try.

I will say that one of my former players plays for him at Jackson State, and he says our coaching styles are identical. One of my best friends is also best friends with Prime, and he says our personalities are similar.

One thing is for sure, he was a much better athlete than me and you, and he is unashamed of his faith. Coach Prime has a lot in common with Bill McCartney. Coach Mac is the greatest football coach ever at the University of Colorado.

But why did Coach Prime go to Colorado? I think his draw to the Buffs has to do with the community of Boulder.

Their low crime rate and natural community environment will keep certain people away from Prime’s program. This overlooked bonus and true adoration from Rick George may be the reason for the hire.

Prime wants to be celebrated, not tolerated. The five million dollars, resources, facilities, change in transfer rules, NIL, transfer portal, and coming in after a one-win season may also be part of the equation. The most impressive thing about Coach Prime is not his 27-5 record at JSU. Nor is it his back-to-back SWAC Coach of the Year honors.

Although his two Super Bowl rings and many other awards he has won are impressive, they are not the most impressive. One could argue his playing Major League Baseball and playing in the National Football League at the same time is impressive; it isn’t the most impressive to me. One impressive thing is that Colorado has hired four black head football coaches, and Prime makes three in a row. That is impressive.

That is more than Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Clemson, Ohio State, Michigan, and several other universities combined. Impressive. However, the most impressive thing about Coach Prime is how he shows his biological children he loves them by spending time with them and disciplining them.

I think many people overlook how he set his job up to spend more time with his children. He coached his children from youth league to college. He had a tremendous professional career on the field and in the studio and found time to be with his children. I find this fascinating because they are adults now, but he is still there. Great Hire.
