The Bullock County Historical Society provided the wreath to honor all veterans at the Veterans Day Ceremony in front of the courthouse on November 11, 2021. This is the dedication spoken by Faye Gaston, representing the Historical Society.
"My name is Faye Gaston. I am the widow of veteran CW4 Jackie Dean Gaston, Sr. Veterans Day is a national holiday. Veterans Day is set aside to honor and recognize veterans who have served in the military.
"The definition of "veteran" is those who have served 90 days on active duty during war-time, served 181 days on active duty during peace-time, or completed six years of service in the National Guard or Reserves.
"A veteran is a former member, or a current member, of the armed forces of the United States: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force.
"The Space Force is officially the 6th branch of the Armed Forces. It was established on December 20, 2019, and signed into law by President Donald Trump.
"Recently, our adversaries have been working to bring new weapons of war into space.
"Advances in space technology have made it clear that space is the new battlefield for the 21st century. The United States will meet the emerging threats on this new battlefield.
"Founded in 1636, the National Guard is the oldest organized militia in North America. It even pre-dates the Army. More than 75,000 National Guardsmen were deployed in the Persian War Gulf that began 31 years ago when the Iraqi army invaded Kuwait.
"One hundred and one soldiers from Bullock County served in that war. The National Guard has played a significant role in the current War on Terror. The National Guard has been deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Kuwait, and Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
"The National Guard supported law enforcement in the riots, looting, and destruction in the violent protests in the United States. Veterans Day began on Armistice Day on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I.
"We have a World War I historical marker on the grounds of the Courthouse. The Bullock County Historical Society provides a wreath in honor of all veterans for the Veterans Day ceremony. It will be placed at this marker after the ceremony. History proves that peace only comes through strength.
May God bless America and especially our military."
