Main Drug Store

Main Drug Store

By Felicia Farnsworth

On the corner of Prairie Street in historic downtown Union Springs, a quaint little corner store serves the community with their pharmaceutical needs.

Main Drug Store was founded in 1944 by Gordon A. Main; locals referred to him as Pete, who graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute School of Pharmacy (now known as Auburn University School of Pharmacy). Mr. Main had three sons who followed in his footsteps and became pharmacists, Jim, Ben, and Tommy.

Ben and Tommy worked alongside their father for 30 plus years. Mr. Main worked in the pharmacy until he passed away in 1985.

Head Pharmacist Thomas Main, Mr. Main’s grandson and third-generation pharmacist, along with his wife Julia, also a pharmacist, returned to the family business.

Thomas Main received a BA/BS in Pharmacy from Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy in 1998.

Main shares the same philosophy as his father and grandfather before him, “Provide the best possible care and services and to treat everyone that enters Main Drug Store, like we would like to be treated.”

When you enter Main Drug Store, you are greeted with warm hospitality and big smiles.

The employees and pharmacists are all knowledgeable about the medicines they provide.

Main Drug Store is a full-service pharmacy that offers a wide variety of pharmaceutical needs. They offer vaccination administration as well as blood pressure and blood glucose screening and monitoring.

They provide specialized compliance medication packaging, free of charge, as well as compounding prescriptions. Main Drug Store offers its services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year.

As the pandemic came into realization in 2020, a few changes were made to the pharmacy to accommodate CDC guidelines and to keep everyone safe.

Plexiglass shields were put in place in front of the registers, and floors were marked every six feet for social distancing; prescriptions were filled as they were called in and brought curbside for the customers’ convenience.

Every precaution was taken to ensure a safer environment for the employees as well as their customers.

Main Drug Store can be reached by calling 334-226-0033, or you can visit their website at
