City Sophisticate

City Sophisticate

By Felicia Farnsworth

Mrs. Nazareth Reynolds Thornton is the owner of City Sophisticate located in the historic downtown Union Springs. City Sophisticate resides in a building built in 1865 and is on the National Historic Registry.

With the help of her husband, Ray Thornton, the inside of the boutique has been completely renovated to show its personality and unique quality.

The interior decor was chosen by Thornton herself, with exposed brick walls, hardwood flooring, and 12-foot ceilings that house exquisite crystal chandeliers.” Bling and clothes are a girl’s best friend,” said Thornton, who has visited several stores and boutiques to get her inspiration for the design of her boutique.

Thornton stated, “I wanted to offer a place of sophistication to help liven things up downtown.” Before opening the boutique in December of 2020, Thornton ran a venue for weddings and events and worked as a Wedding Planner. “When the pandemic started and everything closed down, I re-evaluated my career and decided I didn’t want to be a Wedding Planner any longer. I didn’t have time for myself or my husband. I’ve dreamed of having a clothing store for ten to fifteen years.

So, I went with my heart and opened a boutique full of classy, elegant, sexy, and sophisticated clothing for women,” Thornton stated. City Sophisticate offers women’s clothing for sizes XS-3XL. They also sell accessories such as hats, shoes, purses, belts, and jewelry. The prices are within reason and are comparable to other outlet stores.

Thornton has recently added men’s gifts to her inventory. These include crisp white button-down shirts, wallets, belts, flasks, ties, and socks. City Sophisticate has customers as far as New York and offers to ship.

Thornton is so positive you’ll love what you have purchased that there are only exchanges allowed, no refunds.

“I use my fashion expertise to suggest clothing that fits the customer’s body type. What I suggest may be out of their comfort zone, but they end up buying it because it looks great on them,” said Thornton.

City Sophisticate will soon offer Union Springs memorabilia. Thornton wants her guests to feel at home while shopping.

“My guests will receive great southern customer service and hospitality while visiting my boutique. We have music playing, and I want them to feel comfortable and have a great experience,” commented Thornton.

City Sophisticate is closed Sunday through Tuesday except for the first Sunday of every month. On the first Sunday of every month, the boutique will hold a Sip and Shop, which will offer raffles, discounts, as well as unlimited mimosas and snacks.

They are open Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

No website is available now; however, you can reach Mrs. Thornton on the City Sophisticate Facebook page or call her at 334-750-2929.

“Thank you, Union Springs, for present and future business. I appreciate the ability and opportunity to offer my services and look forward to what the future holds,” Thornton stated.
