Carla Elston, Extention System Coordinator, announces that $30 food vouchers are available for senior citizens. Applicants must apply online on this website: Those who do not have access to a computer may ask someone to complete the application for you with the information you provide.

Terri Bean, Manager of the Union Springs Senior Citizens Nutrition Center, will complete the application for those who make the request to her. If your application is approved, you will receive your vouchers by mail at the address given on your application. (Applications are not accepted over the phone or by mail.)

The vouchers will buy fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, honey and cut herbs from State Certified Farmers Markets, Farm Stands and U-Pick Operations in the state of Alabama. (Vouchers cannot be used at a grocery store.)

Eligibility requirements are that you must be 60 years of age or older on the day of application, and your gross household income must not exceed $1,756 monthly for a household of one, and $2,371 monthly for a household of two. Ask for information in you have more than two in your household.

The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) is a federally funded program administered by the Alabama Department of Agriculture & Industries, Farmers Market Authority Section who provide these food vouchers.
