The Alabama Democrats Statewide Convention was held at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel and Spa Convention Center on October 14-15, 2022. On Friday, October 14, 2022, workshops on party building began at 10:00 a.m. In attendance from Bullock County Alabama Democratic Conference (BCADC) were Bullock County Probate Judge James E. Tatum and Commissioner John McGowan.

Alabama Voter Education and Registration Alliance (AVERA) held a welcome reception Friday night, October 14, 2022. In attendance from BCADC were Judge Tatum and Kala Dennis.

ADC Chair Dr. Joe L. Reed and State Democratic Executive Committee Chair Rev. Randy B. Kelley welcomed everyone to the reception.

Dr. Reed stated, “The only thing that counts on election day is a vote cast...The candidate who comes in second never takes the oath. We must vote!”

Afterward, candidates had the opportunity to share their campaign strategies and visions. Judge Tatum and Kala Dennis welcomed the candidates to Bullock County for the upcoming Get Out to Vote Rally on Monday, October 24, 2022.

On Saturday, October 15, 2022, ADC Convention Day began with the Q. D. Adams Leadership and Prayer Breakfast at 8:00 a.m. Ben Jealous, President of People for American Way was the guest speaker.

Mr. Jealous spoke about the importance of voting and getting out to vote. In 2008, he was chosen as the youngest-ever President and CEO of the NAACP nationwide. Mr. Jealous was the 2018 Democratic nominee for Governor of Maryland. Visit https://benjealous.com/ to learn about Mr. Jealous.

Judge Tatum was in attendance. Afterward, sessions and workshops were held until the luncheon began. The Honorable Jeh Johnson, former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security during the President Barack Obama Administration, was the guest speaker.

He also expressed the positivity of being a democrat, stating we should vote to support Democrats because we are for all people. In attendance from BCADC were Chair Bessie D. Huffman, Vice-Chair Commissioner John McGowan, Avis McGowan, Susie Ellis, Judge Tatum, and Kala Dennis.

Saturday night, The Honorable Judge Greg Griffin of Montgomery, AL, hosted a private gathering at his home for The Honorable Jeh Johnson.

Judge Griffin and The Honorable Jeh Johnson became best friends during their Morehouse College years.

Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell sent congressional cufflinks to Jeh Johnson and Judge Griffin.

The gathering was well attended by many officials and candidates, such as Dr. Will Boyd, The Honorable Judge Anita L. Kelly, Phyllis Harvey-Hall, and Kala Dennis.

Alabama Democratic Conference has been around since 1960. Bullock County ADC has supported conventions for many years.
