10 Years Ago - 2010

Union Springs Mayor John McGowan gave his State of the City address at the Council meeting last Tuesday night. The mayor reported the City is financially sound and has not needed to lay off any employees despite the weakened economy.

Architects and contractors working on the new Bullock County High School gym will be moving into town to begin work as early as Jan 27.

CrimeStoppers will be holding a workshop on absentee ballots at the Bullock County Courthouse. With upcoming State, County and City elections it is important to educate citizens in proper procedure for obtaining and filling out absentee ballots.

25 Years Ago - 1995

About 50 persons gathered in front of the Union Springs Library Friday, Jan. 13, 1995 at noon for the sealing of a time box that will be opened 50 years from now in 2044. The City of Union Spring celebrated its 150th anniversary during 1994 and the sealing of the time box brought to an end the celebration.

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Edward Dillard are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter Leigh Alison to Mr. Louis Cooper Rutland, Jr. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis C. Rutland of Mitchell Station, Alabama.

Mrs. Joan Hartwig Campton and daughter, Miss Kris Campton of Huntington, New York, were visitors of Mrs. Betty Hartwig over the Christmas holidays.

50 Years Ago - 1970

The wedding of Miss Anna Mary Reynolds to John Jefferson Seymour, Jr., was solemnized on Sunday afternoon at St,. Pius Catholic Church in Union Springs. The couple will reside in Long Branch, New Jersey where the groom is in school.

Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Dawson announce the birth of a baby boy on January 4, 1970 at Bullock County Hospital whom they have named Daniel Dykes.

Mrs. Bill Hembree entertained The Twentieth Century Club in her lovely home Tuesday afternoon, January 13th.

75 Years Ago - 1945

Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hall have received word that their son, Lt. Spencer Hall, has been wounded in action in New Guinea.

Miss Jean May spent Sunday with Mrs. Joe D. Driggers.

Mr. Dilmo (Preacher) Rotton spent Sunday with Miss Elva May.

100 Years Ago - 1920

Sale of Mules: By order of the commisioner’s court of Bullock County four of the county mules will be sold at auction in front of the court house at noon on Saturday. Term of sale cash. S. P Rainer, Judge of Probate.

Dr. W. J. Hannah, of Montgomery, was a visitor here Friday.

Prof. J. W. Boyd, of the Tanyard School, was in Union Springs Saturday.
