10 Years Ago - 2008

The fire chief for the City of Union Springs died Saturday, October 18, 2008 in a Montgomery hospital. Tim Shirley, age 48, had led the local volunteer fire department since January 2001.

Join us for the Tourism Council of Bullock County meeting at the First United Methodist Church. Our guest speaker will be Maestro Thomas Hinds, music director and conductor of the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra.

The Model Garden Club met on October 15, 2008 with Mrs. Gene Harrison and Mrs. Earl Hinson at Mrs. Hinson’s lovely home.

25 Years Ago - 1993

Adams Angus Farm of Union Springs ranked as eighth largest as eighth largest in registering the most Angus beef cattle in Alabama having recorded 64 head of Angus with the American Angus Association during fiscal year 1993.

Congratulations to Midge Padgett, who was chosen to be Bullock Memorial Homecoming Queen; Amy Priori, Senior Maid; Stacy Chapman, Junior Maid and Kelly Rotton, Sophomore Maid. Congratulations also to Al Arrington, Homecoming King, Allen Stuart, Junior Attendant and Jason Randall, Sophomore Attendant.

50 Years Ago - 1968

Leo Houston called us yesterday and was excited about the extensive remodeling done at Bethel Presbyterian Church. They have lowered the ceilings, put in new pews and done all the other things that go along with it. All of which cost money. So Bethel Church is having a pork barbecue at the Recreation Center next Saturday. Servings will be generous and dessert will be real homemade layer cakes.

Mr. and Mrs. George Shanks and daughters, Susan and Lori, from Brookfield, Connecticut, are visiting Mr. Shank’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Shanks.

75 Years Ago - 1943

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Chappell and daughter, Virginia and Mrs. George Andrews and daughter, Jane, were among those enjoying the Circus in Montgomery, Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Williams, Mr. W. L. Avant and Misses Bootie and Beckie Williams, Peggy Armstrong and Lucy McCaslan formed a congenial party going over for the Big Circus in Montgomery, Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred McLendon and daughters, Sarah and Amelia, went over to Montgomery, for the Big Show, Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Guthrie and children, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Chappell and children, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Cochran and children and Mr. A. L. Morgan were among many of our folks who enjoyed attending the Big Circus in Montgomery, Monday.
