On Friday the Union Springs Elementary School honored grandparents by hosting the 2nd annual national Grandparents Day. The committee is secretary Mrs. Wheeler, Nurse Osborne, Starrah Huffman, Principal Mitchell, Mr. Shields and the entire faculty and staff at Union Springs Elementary.

Hurricane Gustav could not keep a determined group of citizens from the Mayor’s sixty-fifth Prayer Breakfast.

25 Years Ago - 1993

Ira Hostetter at the piano and Scott Borders at the synthesizer will present a program of music at First Baptist Church on Thursday night.

Mr. and Mrs. Mike Green announce the birth of a 6 lb. 6 oz. baby boy, Cody Aron, on August 9, 1993. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Green and Winton Barefoot, all of Brundidge and Mrs. Martha Green and the late Comer F. Green of Union Springs. Cody was welcomed home by his 13 year old brother, Justin.

Mr. and Mrs. Al Vann (Jean Corbitt) announce the birth of a 4 lb 12 oz baby boy, Daniel Beckham Vann (Beck) on September 12, 1993. Proud grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Roy Corbitt of Tuskegee, Alabama and Mariannie Beckham Smith of Union Spring, Alabama.

50 Years Ago - 1968

Gerald Bozeman returned Friday from Mobile where he attended the state automobile dealers’ convention down there.

Mrs. Ruth Thompson of Union Springs has been named 1968-1969 Education Chairman of the American Cancer Society. In Bullock County, where the Education Program is sponsored by the B.P.W. Club. Mrs. Nell Guthrie is Club President.

Almeria Church of Christ was the setting September 7 for the wedding of Miss Willodean Roughton and Walter Dean Spratlan. Mrs Dick Barr, Jr. sang “Because,” “I Love You Truly” and “The Lord’s Prayer.”

75 Years Ago - 1943

Miss Betty Staples has enrolled at Judson College and will leave soon to begin her studies.

Mrs. W. H. Turner was hostess to Circle One of W.S.C.S. Monday afternoon at the home of Mrs. S. T. Trotter. Mrs Will Smith presided over the business session, after which Mrs. Frank Anderson, Sr., opened the program with the devotional.

News from Pfc. Warren Sells, of the Marine Corps, tells of his continued good health although it gets mighty hot where he is, way down on the desert in El Centro, Calif., and close enough to the border to have the pleasure of visiting old Mexico.
