On Saturday, November 9, 2019, the Union Springs Baby Hornets Juniors (11-12 year olds) went head to head against the Montgomery Ravens (8-0) in the 2019 River Region Youth Football League Championship game, played at Stanley Jensen Stadium in Prattville, Alabama.
Coming into this game, the Ravens were (8-0) and the Hornets (7-1). This was the second time these two powerhouses met, with the Ravens barely graving by the Hornets 13-12 in a nail biter that took place on October 5, 2019, in Montgomery.
The game kicked off around 8:30 pm. Neither team was able to score in the first quarter, but the Ravens made a touchdown in the 2nd quarter. The point after was no good, and the score at halftime was 6-0 Ravens.
After halftime, the Hornets settled down and got down to business. #8 Jayden Parker ran 80 yards on a kickoff return to score the Hornets first and only touchdown. A quarterback keeper by #1 Jordan King added the extra point after and secured the Hornet’s lead.
Both teams battled back and forth in the 4th quarter all the way down to the final seconds, but neither was able to reach the end zone again. When all was said and done, the Union Springs Hornets Junior squad was crowned the 2019 RRYFL Junior Division Champions.
This was the first year that the Union Springs Recreation Department participated in the River Region Youth Cheer and Football League, so bringing home the trophy was extra special for Bullock County.
The Union Springs Recreation Department and its Board members would like to thank Mayor Saint T. Thomas and the Union Springs City Council; Chairman Alonza Ellis, Jr., and the Bullock County Commission; Mayor Margaret Whittington and the Midway City Council; Dr. Christopher Blair, Superintendent, and the Bullock County Board of Education; Mr. Kelvin James, Bullock County High School Principal; Head Coach Willie Spears and the Bullock County High School Football Staff; and all the youth football coaches, parents, community volunteers, and fans for your unwavering support throughout the year.
We will continue to strive to provide quality athletic and enrichment programs for the people of Bullock County.
