Union Springs Mayor Saint T. Thomas, Jr. gave the welcome to the Mayor's 197th Prayer Breakfast at Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church on Cooper Street in Union Springs on Labor Day, September 2, 2019 at 7:00 a.m.
The church pastor, Ronald Smith, prayed the blessing on the breakfast and announced the names of the folks who would pray in eight categories.
Mayor Thomas thanked the cooks and acknowledged elected officials. Several public announcements were made. Prayer was offered in eight categories. Police Chief Danny Jackson prayed the following prayer for Law Enforcement & Firefighters. "Father God, we come once again with bowed heads and humble hearts. We come to say thank you for all the many blessings that You have bestowed upon us. Thank You for watching over us last night as we slept. Thank You for waking us up this morning and allowing us to see a new day.
"Thank You for allowing us to come out to this house of worship to praise Your holy name. Father God, we come this morning to pray for all the Law Enforcement, Firefighters and first responders all over the land. Keep Your hedge around them and show them danger before danger can overtake them. Keep them out of the reach of their enemies. Father God, I pray for the families of the officers in Texas, California and all over the land, who have given it all to protect and serve.
"Bless and protect the men and women of the Union Springs Police Department. Help me to make sound decisions that will make the department the best that it can be. Father God, these blessings I ask in Jesus name. Amen, Amen, Amen."
Other prayers were offered for: Lost Souls by Tom Pugh; the Military by Bruce Smithart; State and National concerns by Rev. Gene Nelson; Schools by Shirley Scott; Churches by Jonathan Perry; City and County concerns by Mayor Thomas; and for those with Catastrophic Illness by Minister Savannah Fitzpatrick.
All held hands and sang the traditional song, "Blest be the Tie that Binds our hearts in Christian love." A brief history of Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church was published in the printed program. The next Prayer Breakfast will be on October 7, 2019 at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church on Lee Loop Road.
