Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church observed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 45th birthday on Monday, January 20, 2020. The theme was “Forward March in Unity, Peace and Love.”

Attending from Bullock County were Reverend Henry Rodgers and Minister Pinkie Rodgers, Dr. John Jernigan and Bullock County Commissioner John McGowan.

Following the church ceremony there was a parade up Dexter Avenue to the state capitol where Commissioner McGowan joined other elected officials around the state.

Timothy Ragland is the first African American Mayor of Talladega, Steven Reed is the first Afican American Mayor of Montgomery, and John McGowan was the first African American Mayor of Union Springs, AL.
