The first meeting of the Twentieth Century Club for the 2019-2020 year was held on October 8, 2019.

Hostess, Midge Putnam, welcomed club members at the FPH Bakery. President, Kate Smoker, called the meeting to order.

The Prospectus Committee passed out the yearly program booklets and reviewed its contents.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of womens’ right to vote, this year’s theme is “A Celebration of Women Authors”. Following the reading of the club collect, members answered roll call with a favorite female author.

Club business was discussed including nomination of new members, binding of previous years’ program booklets, electronic storage of minutes and by-laws, committee reports, and support for our local library.

Members voted on upcoming projects of a financial donation to support a Thanksgiving meal for a family through the Bullock County DHR and the potential donation of books during the Christmas season to the Union Springs Public Library.

The program for the first meeting each year is the President’s Message. Kate shared with the group her lifelong love of reading which included a “show-and-tell” of some of her favorite books from over the years.

In keeping with the theme, or maybe mere irony, most of them were women. She impressed on members how important it is to read - whether it’s for pleasure or just for information - as well as to share that love of reading with our children and other young people.

After the program and a lively discussion of the joys of reading, everyone enjoyed a delicious dessert plate of cheesecake, fruit and nuts.

Mona Padgett will be the hostess of next month’s meeting on November 12th - location will be determined and communicated to members at a later date.
