It was a week to remember, not just a night. Artic blasts of cold weather were in the weeklong forecast before the Engagement Party for Kara Anne Hendley and William Beatrous. Yet, the special night to announce wedding plans, Saturday, February 21, 2015 became wintry warm at the beautiful home of Joy and Don Brewer located on Irving Lane in Piedmont Place at Sturbridge of Montgomery. It was a stage for a perfectly elegant event made for memories.

Kara is the daughter of Darron Hendley of Pike Road, Alabama and Gaye Smith of Ambler, Pennsylvania. William is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Tom Beatrous, fondly called “Dr. B and Miss Stephanie” who reside in Montgomery, Alabama. Kara is the granddaughter of Mary Ann Hendley of Union Springs, Alabama.

The memories began years ago as the two love birds started their romance when Kara was ‘sweet sixteen’ and their romance continued to blossom throughout high school, college, all the way to beginning their own careers. Family and friends knew this sweet couple treasured each other for a long time and so awaited William’s perfect timing of a marriage proposal. It was no ‘dinner as usual’ night at Wynlakes Country Club as Kara believed to be having dinner with William’s parents and an impromptu visit from her grandparents, Craig and Helen Smith from Philadelphia, as they were traveling to Auburn. Yet much to Kara’s surprise, Kara’s twin sister, Allison and her Mom, Gaye came from hiding places just in time for William to pop the question of “will you marry me?”

Soon after, friends and family gathered to celebrate. Conni and Al Barnett, Joy and Don Brewer, Erin and Michael Chapman, Shanna Culpepper, Laurie and John Enslen, Holly and Andy Feris, Julie and Bill Goolsby, Gina and Larry Gunnin, Terri and Bryce Harvey, Mary Ann Hendley, Ann and Russell McCurdy, Julie and Chuck Mullins, Tara and Phillip Nguyen, Marsha Parrish, Lynn and Brian Peterson, Carson and Kirk Smith, and Patti and Jimmy Spurlin hosted a party, ‘in Southern Louisiana style,’ influenced by the home state of the Beatrous family.

Debbie Kimsell of ‘Art is Food’ prepared a delicious menu that blessed the palates of a full house of guests. Shrimp with Louisiana cocktail sauce, bite size stuffed potatoes, Cajun sausage stuffed mushrooms, bacon wrapped Conecuh sausage, muffalettas, bayou crawfish dip with chips and edible spoons topped with pimento cheese and pepper jelly delighted the food lovers. Deserts were miniature praline pecan tassies, triple chocolate brownies, and tiny almond cupcakes baked by Kara’s aunts, Patti, Conni and Holly. Also, Kara’s cousin, Shanna Culpepper shared her Sassy Cheese Straws.

Exquisite arrangements with white and blush colors of belles of Ireland, hydrangeas, fragrant roses, and seeded eucalyptus were gorgeous centerpieces on the tables. The patio and outdoor kitchen area was flanked by extraordinary lanterns with candles, bundles of white hydrangeas with greenery, all designed by Lauren Hutcheson, Joy’s daughter.

After lively conversation and laughter sprinkled the evening, Kara’s father said a blessing and thanked guests for sharing in the excitement of the evening, and then he made a toast to remember. With Kara and William, parents, grandparents, great aunts and uncles by their sides, he recited a poem he had written for the night. The toast was filled with wit, love, and memories as it brought laughter and tears to everyone.

Many of Kara’s and William’s friends from Union Springs and the Montgomery area attended as well as out of town guests.

A May 2 wedding is planned under the arbor in the garden at the home of Darron Hendley in Pike Road, Alabama and the wedding reception will held at Wynlakes Country Club in Montgomery, Alabama. Kara and William will make their home in Montgomery where William is a partner with Northwestern Mutual Insurance and Kara operates her design business, Kara Anne Custom Paper and Lettering.
